How to Operate and Maintain a Heat Pump

A heat pump system can be an excellent set up for your home. It can both heat and cool your home, which is essential during hot summers and cold winters. But to avoid frequent A/C repairs and rising energy costs, there are some basic steps you can take to maintain your heat pump over the long-term.

  1. Know How to Operate Your Unit Daily

Learning to properly operate your heat pump will save energy (and money). Backup heating systems are more expensive to run, so avoid letting it kick in. This includes setting back the thermostat accordingly. Also, unless you use a high-efficiency, variable-speed fan motor, constantly running the indoor fan will degrade your heat pump’s performance. Always keep the thermostat on the “auto” fan setting.

  1. Clean Filters and Coils

Dirty filters and coils can reduce airflow, which will decrease performance and damage the system’s compressor. Clean filters once a month, and replace them if necessary. Pay attention to any manufacturer’s instructions that came with your unit regarding maintenance. Supply and return registers also should be cleaned. Sometimes their fins can become bent, which blocks airflow, so try to straighten them if so. Clean outdoor coils periodically. Fans also need to be cleaned on occasion. Be sure to shut off power to the fan before you attempt to clean it. The coils and fans can accumulate dust and dirt, so also be certain to clear any vegetation and debris out from the outdoor unit.

  1. Call in a Pro

You should bring in a professional technician at least once a year to inspect your unit, and make repairs if necessary. The annual inspection might include any of all of the following:

  • Inspecting ducts, filters, coils, and fans for obstructions
  • Checking for duct leakage and seal if needed
  • Measuring airflow
  • Measuring refrigerant charge
  • Checking for refrigerant leaks
  • Inspecting electric terminals
  • Inspecting motors and belts for wear
  • Lubricating motors
  • Checking electric control, and making sure that the system’s heating and cooling do not kick in simultaneously
  • Checking thermostat operation and calibrating if necessary
  • Checking temperature sensors
